If you want to start a debate between old-school stoners and those born around the turn of the century, ask them what they think of grinders. Those who came of age in the '60s, '70s, and even '80s will no doubt argue that cannabis prep should be a hands-on experience, while millennials et al will argue that a great grinder is an essential stoner kit. The Case for Grinding

Whatever method you choose to prepare your flower for consumption is up to you. But whether you're preparing weed for use in customized glass pipes, bongs or joints consider this:

• Grinding is all about achieving a more efficient burn and a better high.
• Grinding minimizes waste, and that's important given the price of good weed today.
• Grinding is a fast and easy process.
• Grinding is a great way to produce high-potency kief.

That said, just having a high-quality grinder to prepare weed for your custom bong is not enough. You need to know the right way to use that grinder to get the most from it. Here are some tips & tricks that will help you do that.

Tip #1: Don't overfill the grinder

It might be tempting to stuff as much weed into the grinder as possible so you can prepare all the weed for your party in one grind. But over-filling the grinder is not a great idea. Grinding smaller amounts helps ensure every bit of your flower is evenly ground, and that is what's going to produce a nice, efficient burn.

Tip #2: Grind upside down

After making sure the grinder is firmly closed, flip it upside down to enhance the effectiveness of the grind. Flipping ensures the bud stays in the grinding chamber until it is all evenly processed. So flip that bad boy upside down, grind until you no longer feel any resistance, flip it right side up, tap it on the table a couple of times to separate the kief, and extract your perfectly ground flower.

Tip #3: Use a grinder coin

A grinder coin might be one you brought back from Paris Morocco or Bangkok. But it doesn't matter where it's from as long as the coin is small and non-magnetic. The grinder coin will do two things:

1. It will help ensure you get a more thorough grind and...
2. It will make sure that when you tap the grinder on the tabletop before opening no herb is left clinging to the blades.

Tip #4: Don't stop before the grind is finished

It may be tempting to just give your weed a few twists and then load it into your customized water pipe. But you should resist this temptation. The truth is the grind is only complete when you feel like you're grinding air. If you feel any resistance at all it means there are still unground buds in the blade. So keep grinding ‘til the grinding is done.

Tip #5: Keep your grinder clean

Every time you grind, more terpenes, cannabinoids, and other byproducts accumulate in the grinding chamber. Over time these will decompose leading to bacterial growth and sticky blades. Bacteria is not something you want in your grinding chamber, and sticky blades will interfere with grinder operation. So clean your grinder after every use or every other use at most. Cleaning a grinder is easy. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Disassemble your grinder, breaking it down into its parts.
2. Place these into the freezer for 30 minutes to counteract the stickiness of the grinder waste.
3. Remove the parts from the freezer and tap them gently against a cutting board.
4. Use an old (but clean) toothbrush or a small paintbrush to clean the various parts.
5. Drop the parts into isopropyl alcohol (if they are metal) or hot water (if they are plastic).
6. After 10 minutes remove the parts from their alcohol/hot water bath and place them on a clean surface to dry.

Viola! You're done.
