Packing your bowl is not as simple as dumping in a bunch of herb and then pushing it down with your finger. It requires finesse, patience, and in most cases, a good grinder. Here are the do's and don'ts of packing your bowl, do's first.

DO grind your weed

This one leads off our list of do's and don'ts because it's without a doubt the most common mistake people make. Either they go old school and just press the herb back and forth between their fingertips or they put it in the grinder and just give it an inconsequential screw or two. Either way the weed winds up poorly ground and the smoke winds up underwhelming. If the weed trolls are whispering in your ear about how grinding weed is some kind of herbal blasphemy, ignore them. When your weed is properly ground you will notice a real improvement in the quality of your experience.

DO add some kief to the bowl

Adding some kief to the bowl can transform your experience from good to great. Kief, after all, contains 50 - 60% THC. So if you sprinkle some of this pixie dust into your bowl your experience is going to take on entirely new dimensions, most of them dimensions humans don't typically occupy. You can either sprinkle some right on top of the packed bowl or add some herb then sprinkle in some kief, then top up the bowl with herb and sprinkle a bit more kief on top just for good measure.

DO remove the seeds from your bowl

Seeds happen. But if they happen to wind up in your bowl your buzz is not going to happen. Not the way you want it to be. By removing the seeds you will not lose anything. Instead, you'll gain better airflow through the bowl, and better flavor and you'll have more room in your bowl for what matters.

DO use a screen

People tend to learn this lesson pretty quickly, but it's worth mentioning. Regardless of how much you paid for your customized glass pipes or your custom bong, you're asking for a mouthful of detritus if you don't put a screen in your bowl. Not only that, but it's likely to be hot. So hot in fact that some of the particles that make their way into your mouth may burn your tongue or the inside of your cheeks. DON'T overstuff the bowl

Along with not grinding their weed, this is probably the biggest mistake people make when packing their bowls. They just keep stuffing weed into the bowl and pressing it down thinking that more is always better. Well, sometimes it's not. Sometimes packing more weed into your bowl is the biggest mistake you can make because it stifles airflow. You'll have to pull hard on the mouthpiece to get any kind of hit and a lot of the weed will wind up unburned. Lighten up and aim for a bowl that's firmly packed but not pressed so tight air won't pass through it.

DON'T forget to clean your bowl regularly

Just turning the bowl upside down and tapping it in an ashtray is not cleaning the bowl. And you should aim to clean the bowl regularly. Ideally, you'd clean the bowl after every use. But that might be a bit much to ask. So shoot for cleaning it after every second or third use. Cleaning the bowl is easy, just unscrew it and run it under some hot water. Then take a Q-Tip and rub it around the inside until all the debris and gunk is gone. Once a week soak it in isopropyl alcohol after running it under hot water and then clean it with a cotton swab. And make sure the bowl is dry before packing it with weed again.
