Hotboxing has been around for decades although the practice didn't always have such a compelling sounding name. In the past, it was usually done inadvertently. People would be passing around joints in the back of a van or a small room and not want the odor to escape and alert parents, authorities, whoever, so they'd keep the space closed up tight and the smoke would get thicker and thicker. Here at the Puffr wholesale head shop, we get a lot of questions about hotboxing and the various do's and don'ts associated with it. In this post, we'll attempt to address them.

These days a lot of herb lovers are of the opinion that you’re not a real stoner unless you’ve engaged in some serious hotboxing. Whether or not that’s true is a matter of opinion. What is true is that there are some very real do’s and don’ts associated with the practice that we’ll go through now.

Hotboxing Do’s

Do select a good location

Where you choose to hotbox will make a difference: Hotboxing in a public place like a public restroom will likely bring the wrath of The Man down upon you while also pissing off plenty of other people. A better idea is to use your car or the bathroom in your home. We’d argue against using something like a walk-in closet due to the fire hazard.

Do prepare

You don’t want to be ad libbing when all your friends are sitting there ready to get their hotbox freak on. So do a little prep work ahead of time. Grind the herb you’re going to use, make sure your custom bong is ready to go or get all the joints rolled. And don’t forget to bring some munchies along because, well, munchies.

Do make sure you bring enough herb

The last thing you want is to run out of herb just as the party is getting started. Remember, you’re going to have to create enough smoke to engulf the space in a thick fog. So leave the vape behind and bring a handful of joints or a big customized water pipe. Or better yet, both.

Do invite the “right” people

In this case, the "right" people are those who are not going to freak out when the smoke gets so thick you can cut it with a knife. A lot of casual weed fans will head for the door if they think the smoke is too thick, so make sure the people you invite are intrepid souls who will see the experience through.

Hotboxing Don’ts

Don’t forget to drink water

Those of us at the wholesale smoke shop have been through this a few times and we can say from experience that you’ve got to have something to drink with you. We’d recommend good ol’ H2O rather than beer or something like that simply because you may want to drink a lot in a short amount of time and you don’t want to end up drunk.

Don’t keep the windows closed too long

If you’re hotboxing in a car don’t wait too long to open the windows. If you do you’ll eventually start running short on oxygen and that, to put it mildly, is not good. Same if you’re in a cramped room. Don’t wait too long to open a door or window.

Don’t allow cigarette smoking

Some people have been known to light up cigarettes while sitting in a hotbox filled with cannabis smoke. Bad idea! There’s a big difference between cannabis smoke and carcinogen-filled cigarette smoke.

Don’t try and compel people to stay if they want out

You may be having a great time but the person next to you may have had enough and wants out. Don’t try and stop them. You want the whole experience to have a positive vibe and create positive memories. Even if they’re the one who brought the custom bong and are taking it with them, let them go.

Don’t think your tolerance will increase in the hotbox

If you normally call it quits after a joint or two you’d better be prepared, because in the hotbox you’re going to be exposed to a lot more smoke than that. Your tolerance is not going to miraculously increase just because you’re in the box, so you need to be mentally prepared for a whole ‘nother level of high.
