How to Choose a Great Torch for Dabbing

How to Choose a Great Torch for Dabbing

Posted by Puffr ,9th Aug 2022

When you’re picking out a dab rig, the torch might not always be the first thing you think of. But it’s one of the biggest factors when it comes to comfort and usability of your rig!

Our wholesale head shop has put together a list of all the most important factors to think about when choosing a great torch for dabbing. They are:

  • Size
  • Fuel
  • Temperature
  • Flame control
  • Safety features
  • Price

While it might be intimidating to look at so many torches on the market, if you break them up into these categories, your job will be a whole lot easier.

Size

Size is one of the most important factors when it comes to choosing your torch for dabbing. It decides how much fuel the torch can carry, how portable it is, and how easy it is to use.

Bigger torches have a higher fuel capacity. They’re also typically hotter. If you have big hands, you’ll likely want a bigger torch because smaller ones might be a little hard for you to handle. But if you have small hands or are weak, a big torch might be hard for you.

Small dab torches are great if you don’t have much storage room and want portability. If you don’t think you’ll have the strength to hold up a large torch, a smaller one is a good bet.

Lots of employees at our wholesale smoke shop would strongly recommend considering hand size and strength when picking out the size of your torch.

Fuel

Torches use two kinds of fuel:

  • Butane
  • Propane

Most dabbers like butane torches since it’s not so overpowering. This means you can smell and taste your dabs better.

On the other hand, propane makes carbon monoxide. This is toxic and you need to be somewhere well-ventilated if you’re using a propane torch. But if you live somewhere with extreme climates, propane torches are better.

Temperature

Dab torches all reach different temperatures. Generally speaking, propane torches reach higher temperatures than butane torches. Butane torches range from around 2,000 degrees F to 2,700 degrees F. Propane torches can reach 3,400 degrees F!

It’s important to think about what kind of nail you use when considering the temperature of your torch. Quartz goes cloudy at around 1,000 degrees F- this is called devitrification.

Titanium also degrades at high temperatures because the alloys oxidize. This will cause scales that make your nail brittle. It melts at around 3,040 degrees F.

If you want to take care of your quartz or titanium nails, it’s important to keep track of your dab torch temperature.

You can find the perfect nail at our wholesale head shop!

Flame Control

If you’re looking for the best of the best, find a dab torch that has flame control. With flame control, you can adjust the shape and size of your flame.

Some torches can shoot out very thin flames that are perfect for micro nails but suck for big bangers. If you have a bell-bottom banger or a quartz trough, you want something that lets you spread the flame over a wide surface area.

You can even get a torch that has multiple flame jets!

Style

Dab torches come in all sorts of different styles, shapes, and sizes. If you care a lot about your setup, it’s worth having a torch that matches your aesthetic. Look for fuel gauges, ergonomic designs, and trigger-style designs for comfort of use.

Color can really come in handy here. You want a cohesive look. You probably don’t want to just whip out the stereotypical red propane torch when you have a beautiful dab rig. Think about how your torch will fit into your rig!

Safety Features

Don’t buy a torch unless it has a safety lock. No questions asked. This is our wholesale smoke shop’s number one rule!

Hopefully, you won't be using your torch when there are children out and about, but if you do have children in the house, this feature is vital.

Even without children, it’s an easy mistake to make. Safety locks stop the gas flow and prevent automatic ignition.

Look for finger guards, too. Finger guards keep the heat away from your fingers and prevent you from accidentally getting burnt. If you like to use thick banger nails and dab at high temperatures, finger guards are a good idea.

Price

Lastly, price can be a huge limiting factor. Even if you have your eyes set on the perfect torch, it won’t do you any good if you can’t afford it! Consider buying a temporary torch and saving up for the one you really want.

That being said, you can get a pretty solid torch for around $20. One with wind-resistance can be around $50. Add some extra features and you’re looking at about $100.

It’s important to budget out how much you want to spend on each part of your rig. Our wholesale head shop has anything you might want for a dab rig, so budget accordingly!
